Fully funded PhD assistantship in microbial ecology at the University of Memphis (Memphis, TN, USA).
I am looking for one student to start January 2018 (or as early as August 2017) to join the Brown Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Memphis to investigate patterns and mechanisms of microbial community assembly. In the Brown Lab, we use a cross-domain approach (Fungi, Bacteria, Archaea, Algae, etc.) to ask questions about how communities are structured, how microbe-microbe or microbe-host interactions influence assembly, and how these communities play a role in ecosystem processes. Research questions are open, but may include: Alpine and Nival microbiology, the influence of urbanization on microbial communities, or the spatial structuring of plant endophytes. Preferences given to candidates who have a strong background or interest in the following: next-generation sequence generation and analysis – including command line based analyses, experience with mycological systems as well as bacterial, statistical analyses – especially nonparametric and multivariate statistics, and a strong sense of curiosity. If interested, please contact me (Shawn Brown) at Shawn.Brown.Biology [at] gmail.com with “Memphis PhD positon” in the subject line. Include in the email (in PDF or .docx format) a CV, List of References, and a Personal Statement (1 Page max) including: Why you want to join my lab, how your experience is suitable to this position, what research questions interest you, and what your favorite book is and why? This is an equal opportunity positon and I welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons regardless of their race, sex, disability, religion/belief, sexual orientation or age. Applications will be screened as received and Skype interview will be invited soon thereafter. For full consideration, please contact me by March 31, 2017. Cheers, Shawn Brown Department of Biological Sciences University of Memphis
