Dear colleagues,

We kindly invite you to submit an abstract to our Goldschmidt 2017 symposium
(09g) entitled “Terrestrial Plant Evolution and Global Biogeochemical Cycling”

The evolution of the modern critical zone is marked by a long history of plant
evolution, soil development, and water and biogeochemical cycling across the
interface between the geosphere and the atmosphere. Important “abrupt” biotic
events in this history include the development of plant rootedness, fungal
symbiosis, and early plant evolution and extinction in the later Devonian and
the repopulation of terrestrial landscapes after major global extinction
events. But more subtle yet nonetheless important Cenozoic changes, including
shifts in photosynthetic pathways (i.e., C3 to C4), the development of silica
phytoliths, and coevolution with herbivores have been noted as critical to
terrestrial weathering and geochemical cycling. This session will draw from
recent results and emerging work on these terrestrial dynamics through time,
and will also explore the global impacts of these changes on biogeochemical and
hydrological cycling. Abstracts are encouraged that focus on new analytical
techniques, novel approaches, and inter-disciplinary perspectives.

Keynote: Nathan Sheldon (University of Michigan, USA)

Invited speaker: Joe Quirk (University of Sheffield, UK)

The abstract deadline is 1 April (23:59 CET). Contributions can be submitted
through the following website: https://goldschmidt.info/2017/abstracts.
Goldschmidt 2017 is slated for 13-18 August 2017 in Paris.

Yours sincerely,
Jessica H. Whiteside and Gabe Filippelli
