Mike,
You are absolutely right, there are a lot of personalities that are primarily self-serving in their devotion to conservation and other worthy causes. However, we need to cultivate those whose interest is genuine and Alison Sudol is one. She is a goodwill ambassador for IUCN, and as a member of the IUCN Crane Specialist group I am glad to have her involved. You are also right in that having a public face in support of science is not necessary if you are talking about financial support, but it can be a tremendous asset if the goal is communication. A recognizable face can open minds to a message that would otherwise be tuned out. Public figures also have a talent for speaking that I for one don't have. As scientists we sometimes speak in ways that don't connect with the public very well, and I value anyone who can communicate in ways that I find difficult. In the battle is for hearts and minds, I welcome all the allies I can get. Huh! She also said this: "I think it is deeply important to feel the connection to nature, to what we are fighting to protect, to the beauty and wonderment, the magic and the fragility..."
