I realized recently, after seeing a Xerces Society article about the same phenomenon, that a couple of decades ago it was much more common for drivers to have to clean their windshields regularly, because of the squashed insects on them. Back when the joke originated: What's the last thing that goes through a bug's mind when it hits your windshield at 60 mph?
