POSITION SUMMARY Trout Unlimited is seeking to hire a Senior Scientist to oversee the organization's Science Team and to ensure that the organization's policies and practices are based on the best available science. The incumbent reports directly to the President and Chief Executive Officer. The location of the position is negotiable, but could include Arlington, Virginia, the home office of the organization, or Boise, Idaho, the home office of many Trout Unlimited science staff, or potentially another location. Trout Unlimited has an impressive cadre of professional staff who work in offices across the nation on policy, outreach, and restoration initiatives. Trout Unlimited also has a staff of more than 25 scientists spread across the organization. Approximately 12 of these staff directly report to the Senior Scientist, and form the Science Team. The Science Team provides technical guidance to the restoration, policy and conservation activities of the organization, and coordinates with a larger group of scientists within and outside of Trout Unlimited. Trout Unlimited partners with state and federal agencies to develop and use cutting edge scientific information to conserve coldwater fisheries across the country. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining a very strong profile of science in our organization and for maintaining a team to help deliver science products and technical assistance to our organization, and our partners. Excellent communication skills are required, including the ability to distill complex scientific information into terms that Trout Unlimited's staff, members, and the general angling community can readily understand. This is particularly important as citizen, or angler-science, is a priority for the organization. The incumbent must have a strong track record and communication skills within the academic community. The ability to lead a diverse team of scientists and support personnel is critical. In addition to the topics above, areas of emphasis for the Science Team include encouraging communication of the organization's science activities both through peer reviewed literature and communications to our members and supporters.
