POSITION TITLE: URBAN & COMMUNITY FORESTRY COORDINATOR

SALARY:         $45,360.00
POSITION DURATION: Secured funding to October 2019, extension ancipated
CLOSING DATE: August 28, 2017 or until filled

JOB DEFINITION:
This is work in designing and encouraging citizen involvement in urban and
community forestry projects throughout the territory. Work is performed
under the direction of the State (Territorial) Forester, who is the
Commissioner of Agriculture. The incumbent is expected to provide
leadership, use considerable judgment, initiative and creativity in the
management and development of the program overall.

PRIMARY DUTIES (Not all inclusive):
Develop and manage the overall Urban and Community Forest program at the
territorial level, including formulation of local policies and objectives,
and the establishment of program priorities.
Coordinate urban forestry program efforts between the territorial forestry
agency, government agencies, non-profit organizations and other volunteers
in the community.
Coordinate program activities between the Virgin Islands Department of
Agriculture, the USDA Forest Service – International Institute of Tropical
Forestry (IITF) and the national office.
Oversee the administration of Urban and Community Forestry program federal
grant funds, which includes budgeting, monitoring and reporting on
expenditures and sub-grants.
Facilitate the awarding of subgrants and provide technical assistance at
the local level.
Serve as a technical advisor in problem solving with government agencies
and non-profit organizations relative to grant administration and
volunteerism.
Conduct site visits to monitor and evaluate U&CF project activities

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
M.S. or B.S. degree in Urban Forestry, Forestry, Natural Resource
Management, or related field. Experience working/living abroad, especially
in the tropics. Certified arborist, with the International Society of
Arboriculture (ISA) or another accredited organization.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of program
participants and stakeholders from a wide range of educational and economic
backgrounds, and to provide assistance to such participants in the
development of their proposals and projects in urban and community
forestry. Knowledge of tree species, maintenance, planting, selection, etc.
Considerable knowledge of grant administration and monitoring.  Previous
work with non-profit, community, youth organizations. Strong written and
oral skills, along with organizational, record keeping and time management
skills required.  Some inter-island travel required.
