Postdoctoral Scholar Sought to Study Vegetation-Related Ecosystem Services
in Urban Natural Treatment Systems

A postdoctoral scholar position is available for research on ecological
aspects of low-energy systems used for capturing and treating stormwater
runoff. Research will include field studies of plant and animal
communities associated with natural treatment systems (such as stormwater
biofilters) performing water quality improvement services. Specific
research goals include: 1) evaluating ecosystem services and ecological
values (ES&EV) in natural treatment systems, 2) describing plant
biodiversity and functional diversity in natural treatment systems, and 3)
understanding connections between plant functional traits and ES&EV. The
postdoc will be supervised by Professor Rich Ambrose at UCLA with close
collaboration with researchers at the five southern University of
California campuses (UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside, UC Los Angeles, UC
Irvine, and UC San Diego).

Qualifications: Ph.D. in urban ecology or related field. Additional
Qualifications: experience conducting ecological field work; strong
interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work effectively
with a diverse team; demonstrated ability to conduct statistical analyses
and produce publications. Preferred qualifications include: research
experience with green infrastructure, water quality and related sediment
parameters, and identifying plants and measuring plant functional traits;
an outstanding publication record; and experience with collaborative
interdisciplinary research (including engineers, microbiologists and
chemists). Must have a driver’s license and be able to drive to field
sites and between five southern UC campuses.

The preferred start date is October 10, 2017. Funding is available for
1.5 years, contingent on successful performance. Salary (including full
university benefits) commensurate with experience and set by the
University of California pay scale. This position is funded by a
University of California Office of the President Multicampus Research
Programs and Initiative (MRPI) grant under the direction of Dr. Stanley
Grant at UC Irvine. In addition to research activities, the postdoc will
be expected to mentor undergraduate and graduate students and participate
in MRPI training activities.
