Research Associate in Algal Cultivation - Las Cruces, NM
Sapphire Energy seeks a motivated Research Associate to join the team at
our Las Cruces, NM field site. Sapphire, a venture capital backed
company founded in 2007, grows and processes microalgae to develop
products such as high-value oils, aquaculture and animal feeds, and
fuel. Sapphire’s technology uses sunlight, CO2, non-potable water, non-
arable land, and nutrients to grow novel strains of algae in outdoor
ponds. The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in biology,
microbiology, molecular biology, ecology, or biochemistry plus at least
1 year of applicable experience OR a Master’s degree. The ideal
candidate will have at least 3 years’ relevant work experience. The
entry-level KSAs needed to perform job duties are as follows.
· Knowledge of: of biology, cell biology, microbiology, molecular
biology, and/or biochemistry; data collection methods; standard
laboratory equipment, techniques, and terminology; chemical and
laboratory safety; database and MS Office applications.
· Ability to: organize and compile data; manage multiple data streams
and projects; oversee lab and field processes; prioritize work
assignments; follow SOPs; complete duties efficiently; maintain quality
control standards; utilize problem-solving techniques; work effectively
independently and as part of a team; perform basic analysis of field
samples and data; suggest improvements to procedures; understand and
apply rules, regulations, and policies; and provide regular updates to
supervisors and team members. The ideal candidate will have previous
work and project management experience.
· Skills to: collect, record, and analyze data; effectively utilize
Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook; organize work flow, records, and
data; communicate effectively with team members; think critically; and
solve problems.
Job duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
QA/QC
Data and records management
Data analysis, interpretation, synthesis, and presentation
Oversight of lab and field processes
Daily sample analysis (e.g., spectrometry, fluorometry, cell counting,
microscopy, PCR, qPCR)
Outdoor field work (e.g., set up, operation, and cleanup of field
experiments
Routine laboratory upkeep
Troubleshooting experimental problems
Preparation, handling, and disposing of chemical solutions
Occasional weekend duties
The position is a temporary to permanent position. The decision on the
timing of the permanent offer will be decided based on work experience
and job performance. Upon permanent hire, Sapphire offers competitive
