DataONE has two opportunities to work as part of the Community Engagement and 
Outreach team.  The first is a postdoctoral fellow position through the 
University of New Mexico, the second is as a community engagement and outreach 
manager through the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis at 
the University of California Santa Barbara.

Community Engagement and Outreach Postdoctoral Associate (UNM)

Role & responsibilities: 

The responsibilities of this postdoctoral position include participation in a 
team effort to inform development of cyberinfrastructure for the environmental 
sciences through collaboration with DataONE’s Community Engagement and Outreach 
Working Group, in addition to individual activities in support of the community 
engagement and outreach objectives of DataONE. More explicitly, position 
requirements include participation in the creation and enhancement of training 
materials to convey best practices in data management, the development of 
tutorials / learning aids for the promotion of software and tools associated 
with the DataONE project, oversight of a webinar series and associated 
outreach, among other duties. The ideal candidate will have excellent written 
and verbal communication skills to facilitate collaboration within a broad 
network of colleagues across disciplines and for engagement with the wider 
DataONE community.

Many research projects could be complementary to the role envisioned for this 
postdoctoral position, depending on the candidate’s background and interests. 
For example, opportunities exist for research projects related to science 
education, community management, sociology of science, or ecology and 
environmental science at the interface with technology.

Qualifications: 
Candidates should have (or soon have) a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences, 
Ecology, Information or Library Science, Social Sciences, or another relevant 
field. The successful candidate will have proven information and project 
management skills, demonstrated excellent communication skills through a record 
of publication and public presentation, and a strong interest in advancing the 
scientific endeavor through education, engagement and providing access to 
existing knowledge. The successful candidate will have an understanding and 
demonstrated skill in science data management, experience with software for 
graphics design and visual media creation and editing (e.g. Adobe suite, 
screencast, film and audio editing software), experience with open science 
practices and software (e.g GitHub, R, Rstudio) and experience with social 
media. Other desirable skills include familiarity with html and css.

Community Engagement and Outreach Manager (UCSB)

The Community Engagement and Outreach Manager will support a national effort to 
coordinate community engagement around DataONE and Make Data Count. Outreach 
activities will include representation of the projects through written 
communications, presentations, participation in working groups, webinars, 
exhibitor events, social media and in the development of promotional materials. 
These activities focus on generating meaningful engagement of target 
communities, increasing awareness of the projects, and soliciting feedback. 
Community engagement activities will be designed to support users, solicit 
feedback and build a community of practice around the projects.

Job Description
The Community Engagement and Outreach Manager has responsibility for managing a 
community engagement and outreach program in a manner consistent with the 
philosophy, mission, policies and procedures of the DataONE and Make Data 
Count. They are responsible for facilitating, coordinating, designing, 
conducting, and integrating and outreach initiatives across DataONE. They are 
also responsible for community engagement outside these initiatives through 
social media and other communication channels. This individual works closely 
with the Director for Community Engagement at DataONE and the Director for 
Informatics Research and Development at NCEAS to successfully build and 
maintain a nationally-recognized program meeting the need of the DataONE and 
Make Data Count communities.

Responsibilities
● Coordinate and implement the creation and enhancement of training materials 
to convey best practices in data management;
● Coordinate the development of tutorials / learning aids for the promotion of 
software and tools associated with DataONE project;
● Collaborate on and develop training content and community training resources 
in open science;
● Support outreach and general program promotion activities for the DataONE and 
Make Data Count;
● Support and grow the community of users around the DataONE;
● Engage and build community of users around Make Data Count;
● Develop and conduct assessments and usability evaluations for tools, services 
and trainings;
● Collaborate with other staff in research, education, engagement and training; 
and program evaluation;
● Create materials and visuals in support of project promotion;
● Represent the projects through written communications, presentations, 
participation in working groups, webinars, exhibitor events and social media.

Minimum Qualifications
● Bachelor's degree (B.S., B.A.) in science, information science, or related 
fields;.
● Demonstrated skill and understanding in science data management;
● Experience with internet-based communication technologies, including social 
media, new platforms for science publishing, video conferencing, web-based 
streaming, and web discussion platforms.

Additional Qualifications
● Collaboration experience to facilitate work within a broad network of 
colleagues across disciplines and for engagement with the wider community.
● Experience with training and development of training curricula
● Demonstrated effectiveness in written and oral communication;
● Experience with information management and demonstrated project management 
skills;
● Familiarity with standard document, graphic design, publishing, and web 
content management software;
● Experience with the Adobe design suite;
● Demonstrated ability to communicate complex scientific and computing 
information and concepts to a variety of audiences, including the general 
public.
