Biodiversity Informatics Postdoctoral Associate—German Centre for
Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig

------
iDiv is participating in an international partnership aimed towards
increasing the mobilization and interoperability of biodiversity data that
are critical to basic and applied problems in biodiversity sciences (e.g.,
together with GBIF, GEO BON and several other groups). As part of this
initiative, we are searching for a postdoctoral associate to participate
in the development of novel tools and approaches for data and text mining,
database development and interoperability, and software and web
applications. Novel approaches to biodiversity informatics pipelines and
analyses will also be helpful, and considerable opportunity for
collaboration on the development and implementation of analyses will be
available.

The position will be supervised by Jonathan Chase (iDiv/MLU), but will
also work closely with Alexander Hinneburg (MLU-Halle), Birgitta König-
Ries (FSU-Jena), and members of the Biodiversity Informatics Unit (BDU) of
iDiv. In addition, the position will interface closely with others both
inside and outside of the iDiv consortium (especially GBIF, GEO BON).
Finally, the incumbent will be expected to play a role integrating the
Biodiversity Synthesis group specifically, and iDiv more generally, to
Computer Sciences within the iDiv consortium (e.g., MLU, FSU). This will
include co-teaching one or more courses in Computer Sciences at MLU with a
focus on computational approaches in biodiversity sciences, and
supervising students.

Candidates should have a PhD in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or
related discipline. Biodiversity scientists with exceptionally strong
computational skills in topics related to this position (e.g., text/data
mining, database and software development, etc) are also encouraged to
apply. The position will be coordinated through Martin Luther University
(Halle-Wittenberg), but a majority of working time will be spent at the
iDiv center in Leipzig. Compensation is per the German 13 TV-L pay grade.
The working language at iDiv is English, and knowledge of the German
language is not necessary, though certainly helpful (assistance is
available for moving, setting up bank accounts, etc). However, German
lessons are available at the center for non-German speakers.

For any questions, or to indicate an interest in applying, please contact
Jon Chase ([email protected]). Official applications should be sent
until 29th September 2017 to [email protected] and addressed to
Prof. Jonathan Chase, Professor of Biodiversity Synthesis, iDiv with
reference file number 4-8308/17-D. Applications should be in single pdf
file consisting of (1) a 2-3 page motivation letter including background
experiences, interest in this position, and ideas for moving the field
forward; (2) a CV; (3) the names and contact information of 2-3
individuals who could serve as a reference. The successful candidate will
also be required to provide original certificates before official
employment can commence.
