About our students:
Our graduate body is diverse in background and interests. Students come
from Michigan, the upper Midwest, and around the world with a roughly
even gender ratio. Of our domestic students, ~ 20% are from
underrepresented groups. ~ 40% of students are international, hailing
from countries in Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and Asia.

- Supporting students through research and teaching assistantships is
essential to us! Of the past two incoming graduate cohorts (28 students
in total), 26 received department or university funding.
- Maintaining graduate diversity is a top priority. We have several
dedicated assistantships for students from underrepresented groups.
- Department has a ~$30K yearly graduate travel & research budget
- Summer online instructorships with extensive mentoring and support for
graduate students
- Incoming cohorts spend two days at GeoCamp together before the first
semester
- Professional Development workshops and Academic Colloquia

Our program blends classroom education and innovative research. Students
become experts on critical and relevant issues on people and the
environment ranging in scale from local to global. We not only use
cutting edge geospatial technology, we develop it.
Example Student Research:
- Socioecological carbon cycling in Michigan
- Environment, health and culture in China
- Ancient river deltas hidden in Michigan forests
- Clean water access in Sub-Saharan Africa
- Predicting North Korean missile launches using satellite imagery
- Arctic geomorphology – the power of ice
- Woman entrepreneurship in academia
- Societal impacts of dam construction in the Brazilian Amazon
- Linking mass transit to neighborhood economic growth in Phoenix and
Boston
