A 2.5 year postdoctoral position is available in the Entomology Department at UC Riverside. The position would primarily be in the Ponisio Lab, but also interact with the McFrederick and Woodard Labs. The project is in collaboration with the Hladik Lab at the USGS, Hillary Sardinas the creator of the Bee Better certification program, and Houston Wilson, UCR tree crop extension specialist.
The position is funded through the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research (FFAR) (http://foundationfar.org/pollinator-health-fund/) to investigate the multiple stressors on pollinator health in agricultural areas in the Central Valley of CA, including pollinator nutrition, pesticide exposure, and pathogen loads. The techniques include the analysis of plant-pollinator, pollinator-pathogen and pollinator-gut microbial networks, pollen metabarcoding, pathogen screening, and nutritional analysis of pollen. We know no one person will have familiarity with all of these techniques, but are seeking candidates with familiarity with some. For more information about the grant please contact L. Ponisio at [email protected]. *Responsibilities* The candidate will: - Have the opportunity to lead various projects funded by the FFAR - Be expected to be a leader in the laboratory; help to foster an atmosphere of inclusivity, exploration, learning, and a positive work environment - Have excellent communication skills, including effective writing - Be involved in the management of a field crew and the mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students, as well as outreach/extension activities *Required Qualifications* - Ph.D. in ecology, wildlife biology, entomology, or a related field of study - Experience with molecular methods (e.g., metabarcoding, illumina sequencing, pathogen screening) - Experience with analyzing the above molecular data - Work well in a collaborative, inter-disciplinary environment - Commitment to fostering diversity in the sciences - Prior experience supervising undergraduate and/or graduate students - Programming experience in one or more scripting languages such as R or Python *Preferred Qualifications* - Experience working with pollinators - Experience working in agriculture *Salary & Benefits*The salary for this position is based on the UC post-doc union rates and start at $48,216 depending on months post PhD.
