The Department of Biology in the College of Science and Mathematics invites
applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Professor of
Aquaculture. This position is located on the Armstrong campus.



In January 2017, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents voted to
consolidate Armstrong State University and Georgia Southern University. The
new, 27,000-student university will be named Georgia Southern University
with campuses in Savannah, Statesboro, and Hinesville. The expected
timeline for the first entering class will be fall 2018. Complete details

Within this setting, the Department of Biology at the Armstrong campus
consists of a diverse faculty of teacher-scholars who excel at providing
transformative experiences to students. Our faculty are highly committed to
engaging students in academic and research pursuits in and out of the
classroom. Our facilities and instrumentation include a greenhouse,
herbarium, 3D printer, and next generation sequencer and the faculty have
access to instrumentation and facilities available at the Statesboro
campus.  The department collaborates with the College’s Foram Sustainable
Aquaponics Research Center (SARC), a joint venture between the College and
the Foram Foundation that integrates aquaculture with hydroponics to
support faculty and student research in aquaculture, hydroponic agriculture
and sustainability.  The department also has access to additional extensive
aquaculture research facilities at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Bo
Ginn National Fish Hatchery in Millen, Georgia.  Our faculty and students
thrive as life-long learners in the incredible natural research setting of
south Georgia, which includes the coastal plain, the sea islands and the
communities of Savannah, Statesboro and Hinesville.  The department has
been inspired by the recommendations of “Vision and Change in Undergraduate
Education: A Call to Action” (http://visionandchange.org). Applicants
should articulate how their teaching philosophy and research program align
with those recommendations.



*Position Description*. Reporting to the department chair, the Assistant
Professor of Aquaculture will demonstrate excellence in teaching, an
ability to initiate and maintain a productive, externally funded research
program involving undergraduate students, a commitment to mentoring and
advising a diverse student body, service responsibilities, and earned
doctorate degree. Teaching duties will include introductory courses that
are commensurate with the applicant’s experience and interests and the
opportunity to develop upper-division biology electives in their area of
expertise. It is expected that the successful candidate’s research will
utilize the College’s SARC facilities on campus.  The position is an
academic 9-month, tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive
and commensurate with qualifications and experience.



*Required Qualifications:*

•                Earned doctorate in aquaculture, fisheries sciences,
aquatic sciences, or a closely related field by December 31, 2017

•                Commitment to teaching excellence

•                Demonstrated excellence in aquaculture research

•                Potential to attract extramural funding

•                Broad research interest in aquaculture and further
interests in the opportunity to blend this knowledge with hydroponic
agriculture and utilize the College’s SARC facilities

•                Commitment to serve a diverse student body



*Preferred Qualifications:*

•                Postdoctoral teaching and/or research experience

•                Student-centered research and/or teaching experience

•                Evidence of successful grantsmanship

position is filled.  The preferred position starting date is August 1,
