Checkered Whiptail Lizard – Conservation Biology (Colorado)

Location: Fort Carson, Colorado

Job Category: Temporary/Seasonal Positions

Compensation: $12/hour + benefits

Dates: 15 April 2018 to 15 July 2018

Last Date to Apply: 1 February

Description:
The project focuses on the general viability of the Colorado checkered
whiptail lizard (Aspidoscelis neotesselata). Field work will take place from
approximately 15 April to 15 July 2018 and will entail collecting
mark-recapture, reproductive, physiological, and behavioral data on the
lizards as well as habitat assessments. Our data will align landscape
features with local population size. We will also assess immune responses
and stress hormones relative to body condition, reproductive status, and
military maneuvering activities. Our goal is to identify at risk
sub-populations and to help DOD managers implement conservation strategies.
Work on the project will provide an excellent opportunity to gain experience
working as part of a collaborative research team.

Four field technicians will be hired to collect ecological, physiological
and behavioral field data. The opportunity exists for directed-research
projects under the umbrella of the larger project. Students with academic
year commitments ending in early May will be considered but availability for
field work by 15 April is preferred.

Housing while in the field will be provided.

Preference will be given to applicants with an interest in reptile
population ecology or behavioral ecology research.
