Reforest the Amazon on a farm while researching the agroforestry potential of native trees. This is a 4 ha natural reserve, botanic garden and research farm which specialises in the development of sustainable agricultural production in the Amazon. We envisage an Amazon where landscapes and farmers support one another to increase the provision of ecosystem services. Our mission is to promote the the development and dissemination of sustainable agriculture in the Amazon. We are currently developing agroforestry systems to increase the sustainability of cattle production in the Amazon. We also work with lots of students from local universities. Our 4 key aims, 2016 - 2020 strategy: -Develop a community of people and extension agents interested in solution based approaches to conservation. -Provide a base for research into sustainable agriculture and the plant natural capital of the Amazon. -Showcase models of sustainable intensification of livestock production. -Host a seedling nursery and arboretum of economic botany. Research Assistants needed now to help us with our scientific monitoring. We are investigating tree/grass biomass accumulation, responses of trees to defoliation, insect biodiversity and the physical and chemical properties of soils. We are also doing tree planting, weeding and lots of cooking. We will teach you all the monitoring skills required. We take advantage of the early hours because of the sun, so we get up early 04:00 for coffee & a chat before we go out to work at first light, come back for breakfast, head out again, come back for lunch (about 11-12), rest a few hours, and head out in the afternoon. WE WORK REALLY HARD and often under full sun. Other skills such as cooks, website designers, marketing gurus, agroanythings, biologists, accountants etc. have all helped in many ways, so please let me know if you feel you have a a particular skill to contribute. People who come to help will need long sleeves and hats, sunblock and insect repellent (if you are bothered by biting insects). Shared accomodation is included or you can bring tents. We can offer you a shared, beautiful, equipped kitchen with a view over the farm. I buy lentils and rice, but everyone can contribute some food if a more varied diet is felt to be necessary. If you do not know how to cook, we will teach you, and you will find it very satisfying. I can take you to town once or twice a week to buy food at the local market (early on a Saturday). I have a dedicated house for people who come to help with a shower and a toilet. Please in exchange for food and accomodation you will be expected to contribute around 5 hours per day work, five or six days a week. Preference given to those who can stay for a while.
