Job Title: Grassland Bird Research Technicians Job Description: Assist research team studying grassland bird responses to cattle grazing and plant diversity in CRP grasslands of Kansas from 21 May – 28 July 2018. Individuals needed to assist with nest searching and monitoring and taking measurements of nestlings, including blood samples (field base near Great Bend, KS). Two of these individuals to serve as leaders of four-person nest crews (a current grad student will serve as a third crew leader). Duties include all nest-related activities stated above and their supervision as well as coordination of nest data sheets, supervising data entry, and making daily logistical decisions. Nest crew leaders receive no additional compensation other than credentials of having performed this leadership role.
Qualifications: In addition to training in ecology / wildlife biology / organismal biology, the following skills are desired: Nest searchers will ideally have previous nest searching and monitoring experience and experience with handling birds, though other demonstrated field skills will be considered. Nest crew leaders must have some combination of these experiences and will ideally have experience with taking blood samples from birds. For all positions, applicants must be able to work independently and with a team, interact cordially with landowners, tolerate hot weather, physical labor, early starts, long hours, 6-day work weeks, and living in close quarters with other technicians in rural Kansas. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license, be willing to share driving of project vehicles (rentals) for ~one-hour trips to/from field sites, and be able to transport themselves to/from field bases at the beginning/end of the field season.
