*_DYNAMICS OF PROTECTED AREA GOVERNANCE INTERNSHIP_*
Conservation International (CI) has been protecting nature for the benefit of all for over 30 years. Through science, policy, and partnerships, CI is helping build a healthier, more prosperous and more productive planet.
*POSITION SUMMARY:*
National parks and other protected areas (PAs) are the foundation of global efforts to conserve biological diversity. Although conservation policy and practice assume that PAs are permanent fixtures on the landscape, protected area downgrading, downsizing, and degazettement (PADDD) is widespread.  To advance scientific understanding and inform conservation decision-making, our team has been identifying and documenting PADDD events and causes; analyzing spatial patterns and temporal trends; and quantifying PADDD impacts on natural capital and ecosystem services.
*_Review of applications will begin on March 26, 2018_*
*RESPONSIBILITIES:*
The Social Science team at CI seeks a self-motivated and creative intern to support and advance the PADDD research initiative.  The successful candidate will document and analyze:
·Current status of proposed PADDD events
·Reversed PADDD decisions and proposals
·PAs affected by multiple PADDD events
·Regulatory and spatial PADDD offsets
In addition, the successful candidate conducts exploratory analysis to understand the patterns, trends, and enabling conditions associated with reversed PADDD events. Project outputs will include a spatial database, maps, graphs, statistical analyses, and power point presentation. We will also help you develop master’s project or thesis topic based the work.
*WORKING CONDITIONS:*

 * Typical office environment.

*QUALIFICATIONS:*
*Required*

 * Graduate student in the social sciences, natural resource
   management, biodiversity conservation, or related field.
 * Familiarity with ArcGIS.
 * Experience with data management.
 * Strong qualitative and quantitative research skills.
 * Familiarity with biodiversity conservation in developing countries.

*Preferred:*

 * Foreign language skills.
 * Experience with EndNote or other reference management software.
 * Interest to use this project as part of a thesis.

*_MARINE CONSERVATION BEYOND PROTECTED AREAS INTERN_*
Conservation International (CI) has been protecting nature for the benefit of all for over 30 years. Through science, policy, and partnerships, CI is helping build a healthier, more prosperous and more productive planet.
*POSITION SUMMARY:*
Diverse strategies are employed globally to conserve biodiversity, but assessments of conservation progress and performance almost universally focus upon national parks and other protected areas. To advance scientific understanding and inform conservation decision-making, this project will document and describe the use of conservation strategies beyond protected areas.
*_Review of applications will begin on March 26, 2018_*
*RESPONSIBILITIES:*
The Social Science team at Conservation International seeks an enthusiastic and creative intern to assist a global review of locally managed marine areas and other area-based conservation beyond marine protected areas. The intern will: ·Research and compile spatial records and attribute data of area-based coastal and marine conservation interventions ·Review literature and legal documents to understand the restrictions and rights under each management scheme ·Conduct statistical analysis and spatial analysis to support the project as needed ·Generate summary stats and maps to illustrate the patterns and trends of studied conservation areas As the foundation for scientific publication, project outputs will include maps, graphs, spatial datasets, statistical analyses, and an annotated bibliography. The social science team will help the intern develop further master’s project/thesis topic if the research interests converge.
*WORKING CONDITIONS:*

 * Typical office environment.

*QUALIFICATIONS:*
*Required*

 * Graduate training in the social sciences, natural resource
   management/conservation, or related field. Preference will be given
   to candidates who will use the research as part of their graduate
   thesis.
 * Experience with GIS.
 * Strong qualitative research skills.
 * Excellent organizational skills.
 * Excellent communication skills.
 * Familiarity with coastal and marine biodiversity conservation in
   developing countries.

*Preferred*

 * Foreign language skills.
 * Experience with EndNote or other reference management software.
 * Experience with database management.
