GG-404-6 Field Technicians Salary: $17.84 per hour Vacancy # SRFS-18-003 Duration of job: May 7, 2018 through approx. August 31, 2018 Type of appointment: Temporary - Fulltime, with possible periods of PT or Intermittent work. Duty Station: Boise, ID. Must have 1 year and 9 months of field experience OR 4 years of sub- professional work experience OR 4 years of college with courses related to the work of the position to be filled (equivalent to 120 semester/180 quarter hrs) plus 3 months of lab or field work experience. In addition, incumbents must have at least 3 months of experience sampling plant communities, and ideal candidate will be familiar with plant species in sagebrush ecosystems. DUTIES (specific): This work is part of a USGS project that is exploring the use of native perennial grasses in sagebrush steppe ecosystem restoration efforts. Specifically, USGS and BLM are partnering to conduct restoration treatments of Sandberg bluegrass (Poa secunda) and other native species in areas adjacent to sensitive species habitats in an effort to ensure long-term viability of populations and reduce fuel loadings and associated fire risks. A primary need of the project is to collect data in the field in areas where restoration treatments are being implemented. The GG-06 biological technician will sample plant species composition and vegetation characteristics across restoration treatments and adjacent untreated areas. Primary duties include identifying sagebrush community plants to species, measuring plant characteristics (e.g., canopy cover and height), collecting samples, recording GPS points, recording and managing ecological data (on field forms and in a field laptop computer), calibrating and maintaining technical field equipment, and driving on poor and sometimes muddy 4-WD roads. The GG-06 biological technician will be responsible for ensuring that accurate and credible data are collected in the field and will assist with site selection protocols and general field logistic planning. The ideal candidate will have experience in all of the following: 1) sampling in remote field locations; 2) using vegetation sampling methods and protocols; 3) identifying sagebrush community grasses, forbs, and shrubs to the species level; 4) using maps and GPS to navigate to in remote field locations; and 5) using and maintaining technical equipment (including GPS, GIS, personal computer, and digital camera). The ideal candidate will also have good organizational, communication, and leadership skills. Field work will involve exposure to extreme temperature and weather conditions. Field trips will often require extensive driving, extended periods of backcountry camping with extensive stays (up to 10 days) in remote locations. Incumbent should have had or be willing to take First Aid and CPR prior to employment. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: : The work involves long hours spent standing, bending, walking, and a great amount of physical exertion. The incumbent may be required to lift containers weighing up to 35 pounds in the performance of the assignment. Work could possibly be done in 10 -12 hours per day; hours can include all times of day and night, and will vary during the employment term with weather and field conditions. Core hours will typically be 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Travel expenses will be paid by the project at either standard federal per diem or a camp rate per diem. Must have a valid driver’s license. Taking and passing a background investigation and pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is a required due to the physical demands of this job.
