The Gardens at Heather Farm, a nonprofit educational garden in Walnut
Creek, CA, will be offering a series of five workshops focused on the
birds of the Bay Area.

Learn from bird experts on a variety of topics including sketching,
journaling, pond ecology, conservation, and bird rehabilitation. Each
class will be hosted at The Gardens and will feature different guest
instructors. Whether you’re already an avid bird-watcher or a novice
just getting started, this series will offer insight and instruction for
all levels.

The series begins May 3 with renowned naturalist, artist, and educator
John Muir Laws, who will present the ins and outs of drawing, sketching
and identifying birds. Team members from Walnut Creek’s Lindsay Wildlife
Experience will teach about the rehabilitation process that goes on
behind the scenes at their facility. Conservationists from Mount Diablo
Audubon Society and California Bluebird Recovery Program will share tips
on how to create habitats that invite birds to nest. Participants of the
series will also be trained to participate in citizen science projects
aimed towards monitoring of trends in bird populations.

In addition to appealing to adult bird enthusiasts, this series is also
designed to inspire young birders, encouraging a love of nature and
enlightening a new generation with the information needed to understand
and protect our environment. With that goal in mind, The Gardens is
offering classes in this series free of charge to students interested in
volunteering their time both during and after the training.
