Carpenter Bee Behavior and Passion Flowers

A teaching assistantship is available in the Department of Biology for a
graduate student to pursue a Master's of Science starting in fall 2018. Nine
months of funding are available per year via TA-ship and tuition waiver. The
selected student will be co-advised by Dr. Shawn Krosnick
(https://sites.tntech.edu/skrosnick/) and Dr. Chris Brown
(https://www.tntech.edu/user/cabrown).

Research will focus on the pollination behavior of carpenter bees (Xylocopa
virginica) at the purple passion flower (Passiflora incarnata), specifically
scent marking and their preferences for specific floral morphs. Field studies
will take place during June-August each summer. Competitive candidates for this
position will have a strong foundation in botany and a keen interest in
entomology and plant/animal interactions. Students should also possess
excellent written and oral communication skills, strong GRE scores, and
evidence of previous research success.
