Session Details:
The idea of a Mathematics of Planet Earth (MPE) consists of practitioners with
an interest
in both mathematics and the natural sciences as they describe questions related
to the
Earth and its systems. Taken at its broadest thematic approach, MPE
encompasses ideas
such as Nature-inspired engineering and design; the history of cartography;
climate
modeling; and many others. It is a movement with an informal focus, and as
such the
opportunities for sharing ideas across disciplinary silos are often obvious.
The topic of the special session is Mathematics of Planet Earth: Natural
Systems and
Models. The emphasis on systems and models coincides with the great advances
in data
science that have been taking place over the past decade, along with an
increasing
awareness of the fragility and responsiveness of natural systems to
perturbations and
study. Included in the mathematical ideas are topics ranging from the
interplay of discrete
versus continuous structures, dynamic systems theory, topology, and many others
that
might not at first glance seem related. And yet the force of mathematics in
treating
systems and models lends itself to a new sub-field that in its essence lays the
foundation
for natural scientists to discover and argue about the nature of the planet’s
environment
and systems. It is a fruitful journey.
The session promises to be informative and collaborative. The opportunities for
sharing in
this field have always been met with enthusiasm, and the chance to help further
the
mathematics of planet earth will result in novel ideas and connections.

There is still time to upload an abstract for this. Please contact me (Daniel
