B029: Forests in the macrosystem: Advancing observations and models of land
management at regional to global scales

Management of forests for products, wildlife, and recreation has profound
impacts on the terrestrial biosphere’s provisioning of ecosystem services such
as carbon uptake, water retention, and habitat diversity. Further, the impact
from these management actions on ecosystem response may be scale dependent.
However, global Earth system models typically use crude approximations of
forest management, while stand-scale models in silviculture or hydrology are
site specific. We seek abstracts that advance theory, observations, or models
of management practices at regional to global scales, including presentations
that demonstrate progress in mapping of management by remote sensing,
socio-ecological theories of macrosystem processes influenced by management,
novel model-data fusion approaches for inclusion of land use practices in Earth
system models and dynamic global vegetation models, and quantifying impacts
from these advances on forecasts of global carbon and nutrient cycling,
biodiversity, watershed hydrologic regulation, biophysical eco-climate
feedbacks and teleconnections, and climate change mitigation and adaptation
policies.
