Position Description:

The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) recreation areas receive some of the
highest visitation of any areas in the federal system. In 2012 legislation
was passed which directed USACE to update the geospatial databases for
those recreation areas. This updated information is crucial for the proper
allocation of federal road improvement dollars, as well as accurately
informing the public about the recreation facilities present at each USACE
recreation area. The USACE GIS Program is a partnership with SCA that
began in 2016 to fulfill that legislative mandate. The team will be use
hand held GPS devices to verify the accuracy of USACE roads, trails,
buildings, and other features. Once that information is collected it is
passed along to USACE staff for further processing and integration into
their databases.

In addition to the primary duty of GIS data collection, this team will
design and carry out conservation service projects. This an opportunity to
interact with USACE rangers, project managers, and volunteers while
exploring new skills and undertaking tasks that will impart lasting
benefits to recreation sites. Past projects included constructing
backcountry campsites, environmental education outreach, improving fish
habitat, and trail maintenance.
