The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON,
https://www.neonscience.org/), which is solely funded by the National
Science Foundation and operated by Battelle, invites nominations for
members of its Science, Technology, and Education Advisory Committee
(STEAC).

According to its bylaws, the STEAC is “primarily an advisory body to the
NEON Project and will provide strategic advice to Battelle, the NEON
Principal Investigator (PI), and NEON Project staff on the planning,
construction, and operation of the NEON Project and other relevant
programs.” This is a particularly exciting time to be engaged with NEON
as construction nears completion and the Observatory transitions into
full operations.

The STEAC is comprised of 15-20 members who serve three-year terms and
are expected to attend two in-person meetings at NEON headquarters in
Boulder, CO each year and participate in monthly conference calls with
the Chief Scientist/Observatory Director and other NEON staff as needed.
There are currently up to five vacancies available on the STEAC.

STEAC members will be selected from the nominations received according
to criteria that insure diversity and inclusion in representation,
including variety in gender, career stage, race and ethnicity,
institution type, geography (e.g., NEON Domain representation), area of
expertise, and life experience. Particular attention will be given to
nominees that are already using NEON data or planning to use NEON data,
and areas of expertise currently needed on the committee including
vertebrates, insects (ticks or mosquitoes), soil science, large scale
(continental) ecology, modeling impacts of climate change on ecosystems,
LiDAR and other remote sensing like MODIS or Landsat/Sentinel 2
Phenology, broadening participation in STEM fields, and experience with
networks and large facilities, e.g., MREFC, LTER, CZO, GLEON or other
international observation networks.

To nominate a colleague (self-nominations are also welcome), please
complete this form at https://www.neonscience.org/steac-nomination-form,
which asks for the nominee’s name, website address, and a few sentences
describing what the nominee would contribute to the STEAC, along with
their fit relative to the criteria listed above. Nominations will be
accepted through Aug 15, 2018.
