The School of Biological Sciences

The School of Biological Sciences is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in the area
of Ecology/Environmental
Biology. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to teaching,
conduct independent
research and obtain research funding. The School is in the middle of a period
of sustained expansion
and consists of ca.1000 staff and students. Our 45 academics are divided into
four research groups that
provide the technical support, infrastructure, intellectual engagement and
collaboration to underpin the
School’s research success. Our multidisciplinary research environment is
central to our commitment to
excellence in research-led teaching. Curriculum development is informed by our
research, ensuring a
relevant, modern, dynamic and highly-rated learning experience for our
undergraduate and
postgraduate students. The postholder will be a member of the Ecology and
Environmental Microbiology
Group which focuses on broad themes of biodiversity, climate and environmental
change,
biogeochemical cycling and environmental biotechnology, across all levels of
biological organisation
(from genes to ecosystems) and across all taxonomic groups (from microbes to
macro-organisms). The
Group is always well-funded with sponsors including NERC, BBSRC, STFC, EU
FP7/H2020, Government
Agencies, Earthwatch, charities and industry. The School is part of a NERC DTP
and through a
supportive and colligate approach to grant submission, currently exempt from
NERC demand
management.

 Duties of the Role

The postholder will be required to conduct internationally excellent research
and demonstrate this
through publications in high quality peer-reviewed journals and other outlets.
The post-holder will be
expected to develop and execute a strategy for raising research income to
sustain an active,
internationally competitive research programme. This should be in the context
of developing a network
of national and international collaborations. As part of the School’s
research-led teaching ethos, the
postholder will be expected to develop innovative learning materials, teach at
undergraduate and
postgraduate level and supervise PhD students in the areas of ecology,
freshwater biology and marine
biology. The School puts a high value on collegiality that helps to foster the
smooth running of our
academic community. Therefore, the postholder should expect to be assigned
administrative duties
from time to time.

Appointment will be made as Lecturer.

Skills and qualifications required

The postholder will have a relevant doctoral level research degree and a
demonstrable track record of
research at postdoctoral level in an aspect of ecology aligned to the Ecology
and Environmental
Microbiology research group’s core themes. Applicants will be required to
demonstrate how their
experience complements and extends the relevant research in the School and
provide evidence of
successful collaborative research with colleagues in their home institution and
a network of researchers
nationally and/or internationally. The postholder must be an excellent
communicator and be able to
explain their research to diverse audiences. They should have the necessary
interpersonal skills that will
allow effective interaction with their colleagues, our students and the general
public.
