The Department of Environmental Studies at San José State University
invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position.



*Qualifications: *Successful applicants will have a doctorate in
Environmental Studies or a related field focused on the interdisciplinary
science and policy of biodiversity conservation and restoration ecology.
Applicants must have a strong background in quantitative research methods
and should have applied their training to environmental theory and applied
problem-solving. Connections to environmental economics, impact assessment,
sustainable energy resources, GIS and/or international or multicultural
experience
would be considered assets. The successful applicant will demonstrate a
commitment to teaching in an interdisciplinary undergraduate/graduate
Environmental Studies Department. Applicants must demonstrate awareness of
and sensitivity to educational goals of a highly diverse student
population, as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training,
teaching or comparable experience. Applicants should have a clearly defined
research program that has and will continue to produce peer-reviewed
publications and demonstrate initiative in seeking external funding to
support research and related activities. We seek a teacher- researcher who
is committed to quality interactions with students at all levels,
undergraduate and graduate. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to
meet the needs of a student population that is composed of a broad spectrum
of ages, cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, primary languages and academic
preparation – through course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.

*Responsibilities: *Primary teaching responsibilities include the
Environmental Studies core, life sciences and environmental restoration
courses, graduate courses, and other courses in the applicant’s
specialties. Undergraduate program responsibilities include advising majors
and minors, supervising undergraduate and graduate student research, and
directing special projects.  Position includes active supervision of
original Master of Science thesis research, including having regular
meetings with advisees. Active pursuit of research and scholarly activities
resulting in peer- reviewed products is required. Effective teaching,
scholarly professional achievements and service are all essential for
tenure and promotion.

*General Information: *The Department of Environmental Studies was founded
in 1970 and serves approximately 400 undergraduate majors and 50 graduate
students. We grant B.A., B.S., and M.S. degrees. Nine full-time faculty
members are complemented by environmental professionals who teach applied
specialty classes.
