*SCA 2019 NY Excelsior Conservation Corps Project Leader Position Announced*

Conservation Association (SCA) as a NY Excelsior Conservation Corps Project 
Leader in 2019! The SCA already anticipates 200+ leader positions for the 
summer and school year of 2019 - both in the Pennsylvania area and throughout 
the rest of the country.

Program Dates: ¬Flexible Start Date, position is year-round, full-time
Location: The program is currently based on the SUNY Brockport campus and will 
complete projects around the state of New York

Qualifications:
•Experience supervising youth or young adults in an outdoor setting
•Excellent communication, leadership skills, and a strong work ethic are 
required
•Self-starter with ability to work independently and as part of a team
•Ability to carry heavy loads up to 50 pounds and to work in an outdoor 
environment exposed to the elements including camping and hiking for extended 
periods of time (5-10 days per hitch)
•Have working knowledge of safely operating power and hand-tools
•Current Wilderness First Responder and CPR certification required
•Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
•Must have ability to legally work in the US
•Must have a valid driver’s license for 3+ years and MVR that meets SCA 
standards
•Must be able to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards
•Must have a personal vehicle, mileage will be reimbursed at $0.54/mile

Preferred Skills:
•Previous invasive species management experience
•Previous GIS/GPS and mapping experience
•Chainsaw experience and certification
•Rigging/Grip hoist experience
•Completion of an SCA Work Skills Session

Primary Responsibilities:
SCA Excelsior Corps works in partnership with the NYS Governor’s Office, the NYS 
Commission on National and Community Service (AmeriCorps), the NYS Department 
of Environmental Conservation, the NYS Environmental Facilities Corps and the 
NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. Among other 
environmental stewardship projects, the primary responsibility of this team 
will be completing GIS/GPS projects throughout the state of New York including 
invasive species mapping, culvert assessments, and utility mapping projects.

Specifically, the Project Leader will:
Act as a Crew Supervisor, by:
•Leading and managing a crew of eight to ten 18–28 y/o AmeriCorps members for 
up to 10 days at a time, in an outdoor setting
•Leading and managing work outcomes and crew dynamics
•Facilitating team operations including; food planning, tools & equipment, and 
vehicles
•Actively managing project/member risks to maintain a safe work environment

Serve as an Advisor, by:
•Supervising and assisting the work skills training of corps members
•Managing the quality & technique of the work performed
•Promoting leadership development within the team and evaluating success & 
potential

Act as a Partnership Representative, by:
•Managing relationships with agency partners
•Working collaboratively with agencies on program logistics
•Ensuring successful and timely completion of projects

Perform tasks as a Program Administrator, by:
•Assisting the SCA Excelsior AmeriCorps Field Coordinator to complete required 
program reporting and documentation
•Assisting the SCA Excelsior AmeriCorps Field Coordinator in budget management 
and reconciliation
•Assisting the SCA Excelsior AmeriCorps Field Coordinator and Education and 
Outreach Coordinator with member recruitment and trainings
•Ensuring compliance with all SCA Risk Management policies & procedures
•Representing SCA in a positive and professional manner
