The Western North American Naturalist is a natural history journal committed to
publishing excellent, peer- reviewed research focused on the biological natural
history of western North America.
We are pleased to announce that we will award one $5,000 grant to facilitate a
natural history symposium within the scope of the journal. We hope that this
grant will help fund symposia that support natural history research in western
North America but that do not have much financial support otherwise.
To apply for this grant you must:
Submit a 2-page proposal of a symposium you would like us to help fund. Include
the following in your proposal:
A. The aspect of natural history the symposium will focus on
B. An explanation of how the grant will help fund the symposium
C. A list of possible topics discussed at the symposium
D. A timeline indicating when the symposium will be held and when papers from
the symposium will be ready for review
E. A budget to show how you will use the money. Money cannot be used as salary
or overhead, but it may be used for:
• Expenses of the symposium's location
• Speaker expenses (travel, lodging, meals, etc.)
• Other justifiable expenses
Expectations of grant recipients:
1. This symposium can be held as a standalone or in conjunction with any
society-sponsered needs. Recipients of the grant would provide for submission
of between 10 to 50 natural history manuscripts for peer review within one year
of the conclusion of the symposium. These papers will be published in a special
issue of the journal.
2. Provide a suitable number of ad hoc associate editors that can oversee the
review process for the manuscripts submitted.
Send your proposal to Mark C. Belk, editor-in-chief, at [email protected] with “WNAN
Symposium Grant Pro- posal” in the subject line by November 30, 2018. We will
notify the grant recipients by December 31, 2018.

project? Submit your manuscript here: www.editorialmanager.com/wnan/.
