Ecology- UNLV Research Technician positions, spring 2019

The Applied Ecology Laboratory at the University of Nevada Las Vegas is
hiring a full-time field and laboratory TECHNICIAN for March and April 2019
(2 mo) and a full-time BOTANIST March-May 2019 (3 mo). All applicants must
be a United States citizen, have a valid driver’s license, and have at
least a bachelor’s degree in biology or environmental science or a related
degree, or equivalent years' experience (3-4 yrs).

Both positions are salaried positions. Please review the position
descriptions below and include in your application and email subject line
which position you are applying. To apply, please send a statement of
interest, a CV or resume, and a short list of references to

For BOTH POSITIONS we suggest that applicants have outdoor or field
experience (e.g., camping, hiking) and experience operating a 4WD truck or
vehicle. All applicants are encouraged to review climate and spring weather
conditions for the southern Nevada region. Field vehicles are provided for
all local and out-of-state travel. Most field work days are day trips to
field sites with some hiking. For some field sites in southeastern
California and our field site in Texas, camping is required. All camping
will be car camping. Per diem applies to specific, but not all,
out-of-state projects only. No housing is provided.

The TECHNICIAN will assist research staff and graduate students with a
range of greenhouse, laboratory, and field projects in the southern Nevada
and southeastern California regions and possibly southwest Texas. This is
an entry level position and a great opportunity to expand a resume. The
position starts no later than Monday, March 4, 2019 and ends Tuesday, April
30, 2019 with the potential to extend through May 2019 and possibly re-hire
in fall 2019. The applicant is encouraged to be available for paperwork
before March 1, 2019 (i.e., phone and email) to prevent delays in monthly
salary payments.

Duties will include:

-maintaining assigned greenhouse and laboratory studies (plant and seed
ecology),

-assisting botanists and graduate students to conduct plant surveys at
research sites (field ecology),

-assisting students conducting pollinator research (pollinator ecology), and

-assisting with data entry and maintaining a site photographic archive
(project management).

The technician position does not require botany experience, although
experience with plant identification and using dichotomous keys is
suggested (e.g., college level botany). There will be opportunities to gain
plant identification experience. Previous invertebrate experience is not
required. Previous field and laboratory experience or outdoor experience is
strongly suggested (e.g., camping, hiking).

The BOTANIST will assist research staff with a range of field projects in
the southern Nevada and southeastern California regions and possibly
southwest Texas and occasionally provide plant identification expertise and
assistance to graduate students. The position starts no later than Monday,
March 4, 2019 and ends Friday, May 31, 2019 with the opportunity for
re-hire in spring 2020. The applicant is encouraged to be available for
paperwork before March 1, 2019 (i.e., phone and email) to prevent delays in
monthly salary payments.

Duties include:

-organize and conduct plant surveys (2-person team) at long-term monitoring
sites in the southern Nevada region,

-manage the long-term monitoring site database (QA/QC tabular data,
photographic archive),

-conduct surveys at experimental field sites in southern Nevada,
southeastern California, and southwest Texas,

-assist graduate students with plant identification, and

-assist with maintaining greenhouse studies.

To qualify for this position, previous field and outdoor experience
(navigating to sites using compass, maps and GPS; camping; 4WD) and botany
experience (using dichotomous keys and other plant identification
resources) is necessary. Previous southern California and southwest plant
identification experience is not necessary although strongly suggested.
Experience with ArcGIS and Google Earth is also suggested.
