Subj: [URPE] Restore RESD Now

Dear All

I want to inform you that Administration of University of Massachusetts
Lowell has recently decided to dismantle the department of Regional Economic
and Social Development (RESD). The department was launched in 1997 as part
of an initiative to broaden and deepen the University’s impact on regional
development. It has been an outstanding example of how the public
university can both learn from and place itself in the service of the regional
economy. In 2010, after a dozen years in operation, RESD can claim outstanding
success in graduate and undergraduate teaching, academic research and
funding, and outreach to the regional community.

However, RESD has been under attack from the UMass Lowell Administration
and on March 30, 2010, Chancellor Martin T. Meehan announced that as of July
1, 2010 RESD will be dismantled.

We have constructed a website as part of our campaign to Restore RESD Now.
_www.restoreresd.org_ (http://www.restoreresd.org/)
We ask you to read the material posted on the website, and write letters
of support to Restore RESD Now.
Please send your support letters to
Barbara F. DeVico, Secretary to the University of Massachusetts Board of
Trustees: [email protected]
Jack M. Wilson, President, University of Massachusetts:
[email protected] and
Martin T. Meehan, Chancellor, University of Massachusetts Lowell:
[email protected]
Please be sure to copy your letter to [email protected].
And please spread to word to others who will recognize the importance of
this case.
Thanks from the faculty, students, alumni, and friends of RESD.

Kind regards

Mustafa Erdem Sakinç
