*CFP - AAG Seattle 2011 Paper Session
*

*Recreation, Sport and Identity *

Recreation and sport are active mediums through which individuals and
communities express and establish identities. The way individuals choose to
use leisure time reflects active choices of identity building. In fact,
group participation in recreational and sport subcultures contribute to
various hierarchies of community. Likewise, the parceling out of community
space to recreational uses, be it formal or informal, reifies broader
cultural identities. While recreational/sport communities may carve out a
space for themselves, contesting regulated use, official spaces of
recreation/sport can be used in place marketing.

Together recreation and sport represent multiple scales of dynamic identity
processes, from personal to community. This session seeks to represent a
range of theoretical perspectives and case studies to foster conversation on
this topic. Possible paper topics could include, but are not limited to:
sport/ recreational landscapes, sport/recreation place images,
sport/recreational tourism, recreational/sport communities,
recreational/sport subcultures, new methodologies/approaches to
recreation/sport.
