NEW YORK, SYRACUSE

The Department of Geography and the Environment, the Maxwell School of
Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University seeks to hire a scholar
whose research focuses on Cartographies of Racial Justice, with expertise to
teach courses in Map Design. This will be a tenure-track position at the rank
of Assistant or Associate Professor. Ph.D. is required at the time of
appointment.

We seek a scholar whose research and teaching employ digital cartography,
geospatial analysis and/or geovisualization to analyze and advocate for racial
justice. We are particularly interested in hiring a geographer who is both
trained in and able to teach traditional, technology-driven cartography and map
design, web mapping and other courses in geospatial analysis and whose research
and teaching interests engage areas of critical cartographic scholarship,
including (but not limited to): Racial justice; Black geographies;
Indigenous/Native American geographies; and/or Latinx geographies. Applicants
should demonstrate clear evidence of a strong research program and successful
teaching experience (that incorporates commonly used open source and/or
proprietary software programs such as but not limited to QGIS, ArcGIS, Adobe
Illustrator, Photoshop, and Tableau), as well as a demonstrated commitment to
the values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

In addition to contributing to the Department's research and teaching
concentration in cartography and geospatial technologies, we seek a critical
scholar with potential to contribute to initiatives across the Maxwell School
and the broader university. Syracuse University’s Community Geography Program
makes our Department a leader in publicly engaged scholarship. Opportunities
for interdisciplinary research beyond the department include the Moynihan
Institute of Global Affairs; the Program for the Advancement of Research on
Conflict and Cooperation; the Autonomous Systems Policy Institute; the Campbell
Public Affairs Institute; the Center for Environmental Policy and
Administration; regional programs on the Middle East, South Asia, East Asia,
Latin America and the Caribbean, the European Union, and others. The Department
maintains strong collaborative links with other departments and programs in the
Maxwell School, as well as scholars in the Departments of African American
Studies, Women's and Gender Studies, Food Studies, Earth and Environmental
Sciences and the Native American and Indigenous Studies program. Syracuse
University’s campus adjoins the State University of New York College of
Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF), and the Department of Geography
and the Environment maintains close collaborative relationships with SUNY ESF
faculty and students.

Syracuse University is a diverse community of about 28,000 students, faculty
and staff (including about 15,250 undergraduate and 7,500 graduate students).
The Department of Geography and the Environment is located within the Maxwell
School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, one of the university’s 13 schools
and colleges. The university is located in the city of Syracuse (pop.
~150,000), in Central New York, about 250 miles northwest of New York City.
Syracuse University and the Department of Geography and the Environment are
committed to fostering diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility, and
these values will guide our hiring process. We especially welcome applications
from candidates who will not only enhance our representational diversity but
whose research, teaching and community engagement will contribute to diverse,
equitable and inclusive learning and working environments for our students,
staff and faculty.

Our department is a leading center for cutting-edge, socially relevant
research. We also strongly value excellence in teaching, and the successful
candidate will be expected to offer both undergraduate and graduate courses.
Faculty members normally teach two courses per semester.
