>I'm in the coastal range of northern, central California, 50 miles north of >San Francisco. I heard that in Oregon (and farther north?) they call it >"madrona", which I found interesting because our area is full of left over >Spanish influenced names, unlike the pacific northwest, and yet they use >the spanish name not us. Your mention of a ForestGarden brought out my curiosity, because I thought you might want to subscribe to the PNW mailing list - I've been on it only a couple of weeks and learned it can be very scholarly. It also has a "plant of the day" post Here is an excerpt from the subscribing-return post : (and when you say Coast Range I think the altitude has a great effect on plant materials) The Pacific Northwest covers primarily Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia west of the Cascade and Coast ranges. However, discussions about eastern OR, WA, and BC and even beyond are certainly tolerated. But do make clear where you are posting from--if no one knows you're from Spokane, you'll probably get recommendations for all the wrong plants! There is an associated web site at http://www.teleport.com/~allyn/natives/.
