Is there anyone here using Hydropower or Wind Power in your electrical
systems? I doubt that either would be practical for me (read: cost
effective) but I hate to dismiss the options out of hand either.
Winds are intermittent here but can be strong. They tend to be strongest
when the sun is lowest (not surprisingly). I have no idea how strong but
tall potted plants get knocked over as do empty trash cans and such. I
don't know if we have enough clearance at our urban site (the specs say
200-300 feet from other buildings or trees unless you're 30+ feet above
them and we have perhaps 100 feet of clearance. I really like this one
wind generator that you can put on your roof. Anyway, it was worth a
thought :)
There is an underground creek in our backyard. We've never seen it. I
wouldn't know it was there except it's on our deed (and we never have to
water our citrus trees). There was a city crew out on the street a couple
weeks ago to "find a leak" in the creek and I asked them what kind of
creek. They said "it's a creek." Well was it in a pipe? No, it's just a
creek.
I need to find out more. I have no idea how deep it is, the size or flow
rate or if we're allowed to touch it (neighbors have wells but I believe
that's nearby ground water). Because the elevation drop is practically
nothing (I'm guessing maybe a foot or two for all 50 of our lot) I assume
that even if I could get a hydro generator in there it wouldn't do enough
to be worthwhile. Right?
