Diary of a Mad Gardener April 7 On the way home yesterday I
rescued a few split cedar rails that I plan to use around the yard. A
hundred and forty years old, hand sawn by the early settlers, they were
about to be bulldozed under to make room for a new housing development on
the edge of town. They're going to call the place Conservation Meadows. Is
it me, or is there some irony in that? The city keeps on growing -- but
not growing -- so to speak. Can't blame the farmers for selling out.
They've been sitting on their back porches for years watching their
pension plans march toward them -- arrived too late for some and the
developers got it all instead. Another hundred acres paved over. It's too
bad. Soil is important; soil is life, which must be why I like to make it
-- something to do with resurrection, maybe. Picture of cedar rails=20
