I lived on Oahu for a while in the 70s, and was amazed that the local
practice when the light turned green was to wait for the person at the front
of the line to turn left, *in front* of those going straight in the opposite
direction! They'd always let the first left-turning car go. I thought that
was not only a sign of a relaxed culture, but a thoughtful one.
