WORLD SCIENCE CONFERENCE EMPHASIZES IDEALS IN NEXT CENTURY
A recent week-long World Conference on Science held in Budapest
involved 1800 scientists, activists, and policy-makers ostensibly
planning the future of science in the 21st century. Physicist
Joseph Rotblat, who won the 1995 Nobel Peace Prize for his work
as founder of the Pugwash Conference, called for a Hippocratic-
style oath for all scientists. The conference produced two final
documents, a "Declaration on Science" and a "Framework for
Action". The declaration is said to define a new social contract
between science and society. The two sponsors of the conference
were the International Council for Science and the United Nations
Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). In
general, the conference blueprints for the next century call for
governments across the globe to support science adequately
because of the importance of science for sustainable development,
call for more support for science education at universities, and
call for science to be made more open to women and other groups
such as the disabled, ethnic minorities, and indigenous peoples.
