This is a review of three large North American catalogs for
alternative energy. These catalogs cost money so it may be
useful to know what they contain.

Real Goods
Solar Living Source Book
nineth edition (1999)

This is half catalog and half information. With 689 pages
it is far larger than the other catalogs. Along with product
descriptions is some philosophy and opinions about products.
For someone new to alternative energy this is a good place
to start. Cost varies, the last one i bought was around $12

Jade Mountain
Appropriate Technology for Sustainable Living
20th Anniversary, Vol XIII no. 1

This is smaller than the Real Goods catalogs but may have
more products listed. At 192 pages and $7.00 it is a good
reference for someone who knows what they want. I have had
trouble with this company but they do a good business and
 others seem to like them.

Alternative Energy Engineering
1999 Design Guide & Catalog.

This is the smallest catalog at 103 pages and cost of
$4.00. It also seems to have better pricing and different
opinions about energy products. They don't have any
philosophy and focus totally on energy. I find the
 product descriptions objective.
