Charles Long wrote the book "How to Survive without a Salary"
which i used as a reference book for many years. One thing i
learned was to utilize the resources locally. His philosophy
was a combination of conservation and converting junk around
him into treasure. I always assumed he stayed in his urban
environment (Canada) doing small jobs and recycling trash,
but recently found this was not the case.
Two days ago i was browsing a book list and saw the name of
Charles Long as author of a book on stonebuilding. After
reading the book i am even more impressed with the Long's.
Where ever they are the resources at hand get used and become
valuable.
The book is called "The Stonebuilder's Primer" and i found it
easy to read. About half way through the book i began to
wish we had some rocky ground for stones. Of course, if
Charles Long lived here he would not build with stone. He
would adapt to the local conditions and utilize the resources
others ignore.
In the front of the book was a list of Long's other books
which i'm now anxious to read. Here is the list:
How to Survive Without a Salary
The Backyard Stonebuilder
Life After the City
Cottage Projects
Undefended Borders (a novel)
