ECOPSYCHOLOGY BRINGS UP A NEW VISION OF MENTAL
HEALTH, Pollution - a problem of body or a problem of mind
Let's suppose that a person went to the community
psychologist at the health center to talk about polluted
water - what would you advice? "This is not a mental
problem, please go to the health authorities"...
Dr. Thomas McElwain, a west-virginian Mingoindian, says that
in his culture the one who defecates in water is a crazy
person. According to this definition if you look around in
our culture there are not many healthy people left. But in
our civilization the problem with polluted water is seen as a
health problem concerning the body and not as a problem of
mental health.
This is the usual way of splitting things.
To me this is another example of "cultural immersion" we assume
people who polute are normal. We all pollute and we are normal,
right? How often de we question the cultural definition of mental
health.
