On tests of our awareness of the environment, and what is destroying it, ---This is an entirely negative message, so delete it now if you prefer.--- My wife and I were catching the headlines on the tv news recently, when we heard something quite shattering. The report concerned the use of spent uranium in miltary ammunition. The specific item was about fishermeen's concerns in the Maritimes, but we both knew instantly that it applied to our region, as the USA miliary has a big presence here in its war games. We both wondered, what is the point of being responsible citizens, shaping our lives for a sustainable planet that we can leave to future generations, when this kind of thing is happening, which is destroying the environment and killing everybody around us. We moved to this backwater to opt out of the consumer society, and all the other trappings that corral the urban Canadian resident into the corporate global plan. Now we find our very offshore seawater is poisoned by recycling -- recycling of spent nuclear fuel into ammunition. There is no escape from it. So here is a note from some political activists. --- From: Connie Fogal <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Ottawa: Poisoning Seabed URGENT PUBLIC MEETING SEPTEMBER 29,1999 Ottawa Citizen, Conference Room, 1101 Baxter road OTTAWA Wednesday September 29,1999 7:30 p.m. POISONING CANADA' S SEABED- THE US NAVY'S ILLEGAL PRESENCE Everyone who is concerned about the sovereignty of Canada and the military takeover of parts of Canada for military practice and weapons testing is invited to come to an urgent meeting and hear a report on Nanoose Bay BC. The reports from Nova Scotia confirm pollution of the seabed and lobster fishing grounds off Nova Scotia. Puerto Rico is trying to get rid of the U.S. navy use of Puerto Rican territory for deadly war games. The Chretien government has illegally seized Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island for the continued use by the U.S. Navy for torpedo testing and military practice. Starting September 1999 U.S. Navy nuclear powered warships will be able to carry nuclear weapons into Canadian (B.C.)waters. The Human Rights Institute of Canada, located in Ottawa, (one of the Plaintiffs in the lawsuits against the expropriation of Nanoose Bay) invites everyone who is concerned about Canadian sovereignty, nuclear proliferation, and about Canadian involvement in U.S. military adventures to come to this meeting. Open session for people to express their views. Dr Marguerite Ritchie, Q.C., will give a first hand report of her challenges to these illegal operations and answer your questions. tel: 613 232 2920; 613 232 7477; Fax: 613 232 3735; E mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] DEFENCE of CANADIAN LIBERTY COMMITTEE/LE COMIT de la LIBERT CANADIENNE C/0 CONSTANCE FOGAL LAW OFFICE, #401 -207 West Hastings St., Vancouver, B.C.
