Though I'm not sure about the analysis of small scale food growing. Saw
recently a figure that suggested that in the UK over 20% of vegetable
production is done in back gardens and that that percentage may actually be
rising. What I'm seeing here in Ireland is that people buy a newly built
house, plant grass and shrubs and cover them with chemicals, get bored with
the look of it and add flowers, start to read up and watch gardening
programmes and cut back on the chemicals and start putting a few veggies
in. 10 years down the road that house often has a nice healthy mixture of
food, flowers and places to play. Maybe the same thing will happen
elsewhere in this evolving world. And I would be surprised if the world pop
grows quite as fast as present fears indicate (by the way did you notice
that despite the demographics the official six billionth was born in
Sarajevo, in a hospital, and was a good healthy 8lb? - Someone from the PR
machine in there) I don't expect the whole human race to put as much effort
into thinking about the planet as this list does but the mere fact that
I've got through my first half century on it when my parents didn't expect
me to make my first birthday before we blew ourselves to smithereens gives
me some hope.
So happy birthday 6 billionth baby and lets all keep plodding along our
ecopaths
