Sleeping Porches, Yard Lights, Long Underwear, and Boots Sleeping Porches may not be considered a simplicity topic, but for me everything is connected. Small acts moving closer to nature can make our life more interesting and possibly provide a better night sleep. In this area we have few bugs and cool summer evenings which are ideal for sleeping porches. When i lived in the South they used screened porches. Well... they did at one time. I haven't seen a sleeping porch in many years. Yard Lights are everywhere in this area. I've never had one and wonder what purpose they serve in the middle of the night. Is this an attempt to push back the dark or some primitive form of campfire. Occasionally, we have a small campfire and cook outside. We can then sit around the coals for awhile a talk. It gives one a peaceful feeling and is much more interesting than those events they call barbecue's or yard lights. Long Underwear is my favorite answer to winter cold and staying close to the seasons. It is also an energy saving habit and generally makes one more compatible with winter. Last winter i watched the local kids dress in the current fashion which is either loose clothes or shorts. All winter they wore shorts and were not often idle while outside. It is a choice, going with cultural fashion or flowing with the seasons. I much prefer being unfashionable and wearing long underwear. Hey! they come in red, blue, white, tan, and light blue. I've got all the colors. Boots are a common sight at farmers doors. This is essential for winter comfort and walking in the muck. The opposite of boots is going barefoot and for many cultures that is what they do inside the house. It makes sense to me. Shoes should fit the local conditions and if not needed the feet are probably happier being outside. ---- jeff owens, [EMAIL PROTECTED], http://www.teleport.com/~kowens underground house, solar power, self-reliance, edible landscape to leave ecopath: unsubscribe ecopath -> [EMAIL PROTECTED]
