Was it mentioned that their cat was a surrogate?  I ask because in our
case, people are extremely assumptive about us.  They figure that we
have dogs as surrogates.  We've been married 10 years (in about 3-4
weeks) and together for 15 and people can't figure out why we don't have
kids.  We try to explain that not everything is rosy when you have kids
and that as of now, we're not considering them but this seems to be a
foreign concept and they look at us like we just stepped off the
mothership.
