from a post to sanet-mg .. "GEMA Summary April, 15 1998:
Amounts spent on food in 1996 (USA):
    paid to farmers: $126 billion
    marketing cost: $421 billion

 ----

Yesterday i visited Bob's Red Mill in Portland and for a few
dollars filled a cart with grains, nuts, seeds, beans, etc. If
it is possible to connect with a farmer, coop, or grain mill the
cost and quality of food makes it worthwhile. This is one
of my favorite activities each fall.

 ----

Now is the time to gather fall seeds. Many oaks shed their
acorns now as do other nut trees. Many wild fruiting plants
are available now also. Just about anywhere in the Northern
latitudes some plant is spreading its seeds. Our rewards are:
food, future tree, watching an indoor sprout grow, education...

 ----

This is the last chance to collect herb seeds and protect
plants from winter weather. Flowering perennials may need
the buds removed (stevia).
