>So, this is the week for EcoPath to wax philosophical...

I wish I could participate.
Unfortunately, it is November in an even-numbered year, and that means
local elections in BC. Ah yes, the province where a man changed his name to
Amor de Cosmos and promptly became Premier.

Concurrent with the elections, one of our local levels of government is
bringing in a new Land Use Bylaw replete with restrictions on agriculture
but loosening of restrictions on Home -based business and light industry
(=anything except mining and logging), and the other local level of
government is bringing forward a referendum to permit the wholesale
sell-off of natural parkland to buy land in the town centre for a swimming
pool and attendant parking lots etc. Yikes.

So our choice is whether to put limited energies into opposing the Land Use
Bylaw, opposing the sale of natural parkland, or supporting candidates who
oppose the above and might win office. (One of the complicating factors is
that we do not have actual local self-government on Salt Spring Island,
even though we have two levels of local government. It is truly bizarre.)

Many people are tired of always having to be negative (No, not true -- my
wife never was into being negative, but she tires of hearing me be
negative. ) But that seems to be the nature of the times in our community.
If you are trying to build a self-sufficient community, you hafta be
negative and oppose what the Forces are trying to do.
