The alt.energy.homepower newsgroup exploded a few days ago
when the topic of "running out of oil" was introduced. I've
been over this ground a few hundred times and was not interested
in the facts, but it is interesting to speculate on why
this topic was pounced on. I think there is a large worry
nagging a lot of people just under the surface. Some are
in denial and others can't express it clearly.

The alt.agriculture.sustainable newsgroup had some
pointers to interesting web pages. I checked the
first one and it has a section on the Hunza which is
well done.

The other web page is on holism, evolution, and ecology.

Eric's essay on sustainability was posted to the Deep-Ecology
discussion list and i found it to be well done and interesting
reading. So far there have not been any comments except for
the ones i wrote. For me this is a real puzzle. I wonder what
others think of this material. Eric, can i post this to other
discussion lists and drag any comments back here?

Ah... this really hits home. I often feel my criticisms are
being too negative, but also know that a system without
criticism does not adjust and improve. I have irritated a few
people within Permaculture by being critical and have since
pondered about how one detects the state of "being too
negative". I can see that people with new ideas feel very
threatened by criticism. Ideas held with confidence and based
on a large experience base tend to welcome criticism. Possibly,
how we criticise, what we criticise, and who we talk to, all fit
into this.

Sounds like an open mind accepting too much responsibility for
the state of the world and its impact on daily life. Unfortunately,
you are my inspiration for "car rejection" and "road removal". As
part of this role you are not allowed to get tired <grin>.
