The following quote is taken from a post to the Shetland
Sheep discussion list.
We are suggesting that, in a truly sustainable farm
economy, the primary function of livestock is to cheaply
convert grass into fertilizer. Fur, wool, leather,
milk, and meat are important, but secondary. And manure,
especially ruminant manure, is not ordinary fertilizer.
Correctly handled and composted, it far outperforms
vegetable compost, both in terms of soil nutrition and
bio-activation.
I think the above ideas are usually referred to as "biodynamics"
and have a large base of supporting literature. Interesting
that these old ideas are resurfacing.
