One of the things I do in "activist" mode is help to run an organic
certification scheme. Our wonderful and efficient administrator recently
decided to do some analysis on how people make the transition. Takes about
a year for the average farmer whose heard that going organic might be a
good thing to pick up a leaflet. Takes him two more years to pick up a
phone and ask for an information pack. Takes two more years to get around
to actually obtaining and reading a copy of our standards. From there its
about 3 months to jumping in. Maybe a lot of the people sitting listening
are trying to decide for themselves if there is a problem, what it is, and
if the people on this list really have any suggestions that might help them
to find their own solutions. In a couple of years they'll have had the time
to think about it and do something. Maybe some are reading their mail at
the end of a long hard days self sufficiency when they are far too tired to
think. Maybe some are just wondering what this bunch of geeks are rabitting
on about and they'll sign off in a day or two. Anyway they are all welcome
to sit in.
