The concept of a path without a clear goal can be confusing.
Also, the concept of life as a process where the present
controls both the past and future is easy to say but 
difficult to apply.  Another way to view these ideas
is described by this quote:

  Not every end is a goal.  The end of a melody is not its
  goal; but nonetheless, if the melody had not reached its
  end it would not have reached its goal.
    -- Friedrich Nietzsche

Try substituting the word "life" for "melody".
